Description

Belonging: A Journey of Love by Sonia Gandhi will be published by HarperCollins India on 10 November 2026. It is the long-awaited memoir of one of India’s most closely watched public figures — a personal story of love, identity, duty and belonging, told with an insider’s view of the country’s recent history.

The book opens in Cambridge in 1965, where nineteen-year-old Sonia Maino meets Rajiv Gandhi, grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru. From her childhood in post-war Veneto to marriage and life in India, Gandhi writes about learning Hindi, wearing saris, and raising two children in the Prime Minister’s house in Delhi while Rajiv worked as a commercial airline pilot.

Those years are reshaped by loss: the death of Sanjay Gandhi in a plane crash, the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, and Rajiv’s assassination seven years later. Against advice to return to Italy, Sonia stays in India, later becoming the longest-serving president of the Indian National Congress. When offered the prime ministership after a key election, she declines, choosing instead to lead her party in a governing alliance for a decade.

HarperCollins describes the memoir as weaving the personal with the political — a portrait of a renowned political family and of India across fifty years of change. Sonia Gandhi lives in New Delhi and serves in the Rajya Sabha; her children Rahul and Priyanka are Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.
